In 2022, Eco Marine was contracted by the South Coast Dredging Association (SCDA) to conduct the South Coast Regional Seabed Monitoring Programme (RSMP) on behalf of the marine aggregate companies operating in UK waters.
The principal objective was to gather information which can be used to assess changes in seabed condition against the baseline conditions and to inform consideration of the potential for recovery of the region post-dredging. The South Coast RSMP encompassed an area offshore from Poole to Eastbourne and so covered the South Coast and East English Channel dredging areas.
The principal works employed a mini Hamon grab at 630 stations, in-line with the RSMP survey protocols, to collect samples for subsequent sediment particle size analysis (PSA) and faunal analysis. Fieldwork concluded in autumn 2022 and PSA and faunal analysis are currently ongoing. Upon completion of the fieldwork, Eco Marine produced a comprehensive Survey Report, a Lab Report will also be produced upon completion of sample analysis.
A range of habitats and fauna were observed during the fieldwork portion of the project with some of the most interesting finds pictured below, including Spatangus purpureus, Asterias rubens and a tiny juvenile scallop.
